La storia del pezzo
Una canzone nata due volte
Prima di essere di Tina Turner, «The Best» era di Bonnie Tyler: la cantante gallese la incise per il suo album «Hide Your Heart», uscita come singolo nel gennaio 1988. Il brano, scritto da Mike Chapman e Holly Knight, era stato offerto in origine a Paul Young, che lo rifiutò. Per Tyler fu un successo modesto: primi dieci posti in Norvegia, ma appena una settimana in classifica nel Regno Unito.
Tina Turner la incise l'anno dopo per «Foreign Affair», con un assolo di sassofono di Edgar Winter. Prima di registrarla chiese all'autrice Holly Knight di aggiungere un bridge che sentiva mancasse, e un cambio di tonalità. Uscita come singolo il 21 agosto 1989, diventò uno dei suoi brani più riconoscibili, tanto da essere spesso ricordato con il titolo sbagliato «(Simply) The Best», preso dal ritornello.
