Il brano lo scrivono Terry Britten e Graham Lyle, che prima lo propongono a Cliff Richard: rifiutato. Passa anche dai Bucks Fizz, che lo incidono nel febbraio 1984 con la voce del membro maschile Bobby G, nonostante Jay Aston avesse chiesto di cantarlo lei dopo aver sentito il demo. Quella versione resterà inedita fino al 2000.
Tina Turner la registra per «Private Dancer», il suo quinto album, e Capitol la pubblica come singolo nel maggio 1984. Diventa il suo singolo di maggior successo: primo posto nella Billboard Hot 100, oltre due milioni di copie vendute nel mondo. A 44 anni Turner diventa la più anziana artista solista donna ad arrivare al numero uno di quella classifica.
