Il portiere sbagliato di Sting
Sting scrisse questa canzone dopo aver visto le prostitute vicino all'hotel squallido di Parigi dove i Police alloggiavano nell'ottobre 1977, in trasferta per suonare al Nashville Club. Il titolo lo prese da un vecchio manifesto di Cyrano de Bergerac appeso nell'ingresso dell'albergo: Roxanne era il nome del personaggio femminile della commedia.
Sting l'aveva pensata come una bossa nova, ma fu il batterista Stewart Copeland a proporre il ritmo di tango con cui la conosciamo. Durante la registrazione Sting si sedette per sbaglio sui tasti di un pianoforte in studio: quell'accordo stonato e le risate che seguono sono rimasti all'inizio del disco.
Uscì come singolo il 14 aprile 1978, prima dell'album Outlandos d'Amour. Al primo giro non entrò in classifica; fu la ristampa del 13 aprile 1979 a portarla al numero 12 nel Regno Unito. Nel 1997 il produttore Puff Daddy ne fece un remix, «Roxanne '97», con la voce del rapper Pras.
