Steve Winwood scrisse questa canzone con Will Jennings e la incise per il suo terzo album da solista, Talking Back to the Night, uscito nel 1982. Il testo racconta di un uomo che ripensa a un amore perduto, sperando di ritrovarlo un giorno.
Jennings ha raccontato che Valerie è una persona reale, di cui non ha mai voluto rivelare l'identità: una donna che era quasi arrivata al vertice della sua professione e se l'è lasciata sfuggire. Si è parlato, senza conferme, della cantante Valerie Carter.
Il singolo del 1982 passò quasi inosservato in classifica. Nel 1987 arrivò però un remix di Tom Lord-Alge, incluso nella raccolta Chronicles, che questa volta sfondò arrivando fino al numero 9 della Billboard Hot 100.
