«Upside Down» esce il 18 giugno 1980 dalla Motown, primo singolo dell'album Diana. A scriverla e produrla sono Nile Rodgers e Bernard Edwards, i due di Chic. Nel testo la protagonista ammette che il suo compagno non le è fedele, eppure quella storia la manda comunque sottosopra.
Rodgers ha raccontato che Diana Ross fu la prima grande star con cui lavorarono, e che la presero molto sul serio: passarono giorni a intervistarla, un approccio più personale di quello riservato prima ad altri artisti.
Il brano arriva al numero uno della Billboard Hot 100 il 6 settembre 1980 e ci resta per quattro settimane. Nel 1981 riceve una nomination ai Grammy Award come Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
